It covers 16.9 hectares (42 acres) making it one of the largest Grand Cru vines on the Cote de Nuits. The original Clos de la Roche climat was only 4.5 hectares, but in 1936, six neighbouring vines were added to the appellation.

The terroir of Clos de la Roche wines
The vineyard's soil is mainly limestone, with thin topsoils varying from a few centimeters to one meter deep. The lower slopes are composed of Bajocian marl (this is from the Jurassic period), while the upper, more steep areas are made of Bathonian limestone. This soil composition helps to produce the structured, nuanced wine that Clos de la Roche is known for.
