The best wines from Chapelle-Chambertin

Chapelle-Chambertin is a Grand Cru appellation for Pinot Noir wines in Burgundy's Cote de Nuits region. Appellation d'Origine Controlee (AOC) status was formally acknowledged on July 31, 1937. It has a long history of producing strong well-structured wines. This vineyard is among the smallest in Gevrey-Chambertin, covering a mere 5.5 hectares. The region's sunny days and mild nights produce the ideal combination of sugars and acidity in the grapes, while the limestone-rich soils create strong vine roots.

The term "Chambertin" itself first appeared in the 13th century and rose to prominence, even becoming Napoleon's favorite wine. The vineyard boundaries were set during the Middle Ages and haven't changed since. Later, seven nearby vineyards were permitted to use the Chambertin name on their own in recognition of their common tradition and excellence.

Among the Gevrey-Chambertin Grand Crus, Chapelle-Chambertin wines are lighter in color and less concentrated, but they are nonetheless nuanced and full-bodied. After 8 to 20 years of ageing these wines usually reach their peak. Plots in this highly esteemed appellation are owned by prominent producers such as Pierre Damoy and Louis Jadot.
