The terroir of Corton
One of the key elements that distinguishes the wines of the Montagne de Corton is its terroir. The Bois de Corton is a remarkable limestone outcrop that is surrounded by thick forests at its highest point. Nearly the whole hill is covered with vines. Only the southern half which receives the best sun exposure from southeast to southwest, is eligible for Grand Cru distinction. The slope's geological makeup varies with reddish, pebbly soils that are rich in potassium and marl in the middle. This is perfect for Pinot Noir.
