The Domaine de la Commaraine has a history in Burgundy wine production, dating back to the 12th century. It used to owned by Jaboulet-Vercherre, the marketing was done by winemaker-negociant Louis Jadot, but was sold to Denise Dupré (professor at Harvard) and Mark Nunelly (Investment fund manager) around 2017. Their goal was to bring back the Clos de la Commaraine to its high standards and establish it as one of the leading Premier Crus in Cote de Beaune.
One of their first steps was to enlist the expertise of Louis-Michel Liger-Belair, the renowned winemaker from Domaine Comte du Liger-Belair, to consult on the wine. Under his direction, the first vintage produced using biodynamic farming was the 2018. It was received with great enthusiasm.
The Clos, which is a monopole of 3.63 hectares is located in Pommard. Enclosed by walls along with the Chateau, it is a true "Clos”. It is considered one of the most prestigious premiers crus and highly-regarded Climats in Burgundy. Danguy and Aubertin praised la Commaraine as the most well-known climat in their book on Burgundy wines in 1892, and Jean-François Bazin stated that le Clos de la Commaraine is one of the three climats in Pommard that could be recognized as a grand cru.
Le Clos de la Commaraine produces highly refined and well-balanced wines. To produce these exceptional wines, the Clos is divided into eight sub-plots, which are vinified and aged separately. After tasting each barrel, the best barrels are blended to create the Clos de la Commaraine.
Clos de la Commaraine is situated on the northern slopes of Beaune and planted on clay and limestone soils colored red by iron oxides. The Domaine de la Commaraine explores the diversity of the terroir through precise studies and soil composition analysis. The vineyard practices precise and restrictive wine growing techniques to produce high-quality grapes on this great terroir.
The Clos de la Commaraine was converted to organic farming in 2017 and is progressively moving towards biodynamic techniques.
The first vintages of the ‘new’ Clos de la Commaraine are rated high by professional winejournalists. The revival of this legendary Clos is promising.
