The Linkwood 15 Years Old Silver Seal Young Cask 04105 57.2% is a whisky that embodies the character and craftsmanship of Linkwood distillery, located in the picturesque town of Elgin within the Speyside region of Scotland. Bottled in 2023 by the esteemed Italian independent bottler Silver Seal, this expression offers whisky enthusiasts a taste of the exceptional quality and unique flavors for which Linkwood is renowned.
Linkwood distillery has a rich history that dates back to its establishment in 1821 by Peter Brown, with production commencing in 1825. Initially equipped with two stills, the distillery had a modest capacity of 4,500 liters per year. Following Peter Brown's passing in 1868, the distillery came under the control of his son, William Brown, who oversaw the design and construction of a new distillery in 1872-1873, replacing the old facility on the same site. The new distillery, designed by architect Methven, boasted an increased capacity of 227,000 liters per year, reflecting the growing demand for Linkwood whisky.
In 1898, the Linkwood-Glenlivet company was established by the Brown family and brought to the stock exchange. Over the years, the distillery continued to expand, with further extensions increasing its capacity to an impressive 454,000 liters per year. In 1902, Innes Cameron joined the company and became the managing director of Linkwood distillery until his death in 1932. His contributions and vision were instrumental in shaping the distillery's success, and by that time, he had become the largest shareholder of the company.
The distillery underwent significant changes in the 20th century. After a temporary closure from 1941 to 1945 due to barley shortages during World War II, it reopened under the leadership of Roderick Mackenzie. Mackenzie, who believed that every aspect of the distillery influenced the final product, oversaw a complete refurbishment of Linkwood in 1962. The distillery was electrified, replacing the steam engine and water wheel that had powered it before. All stills were also replaced with exact replicas of the original ones, ensuring consistency and preserving the distillery's traditional methods.
In 1971, a second distillery, known as Linkwood B, was built alongside the original, equipped with steam-heated stills. The stills in the first distillery were also converted to steam heating. With the addition of Linkwood B, the combined capacity of the two distilleries reached an impressive 2.5 million liters per year.
