Jacques Selosse has released the 2013 vintage wine Millésime Extra Brut, made from the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grape varieties, as a single-vintage Champagne. Furthermore, in this context, the term Extra Brut means that the dosage (sugar added at bottling) is 2.2 grams per liter. This allows the fruit aromas and the characteristics of that particular vintage to stand out.
The 2013 vintage was marked by a delayed harvest. A cool, wet spring caused flowering to be delayed for the June, and in some areas, it was pushed back until the beginning of July. Furthermore, due to the effects of cullure and millerandage, the grape clusters were thinned. Subsequently, hot and dry weather set in during July and August. Harvesting began on the 24th of September in several villages for the Aube vintage; however, the majority of winegrowers for the Marne vintage waited until October. This was approximately six weeks later than in 2011. Since the risk of rot remained low in most vineyards, growers were able to leave the fruit on the vines.
This long, gradual period of ripening on the vine is reflected in the wine poured into the glass. The flavors of ripe fruit are complemented by a crisp acidity preserved thanks to the cool year.
