Tasting Note Kirchenstuck GG 2021

Saline on the nose, dense rather than showy, with a mineral core that builds instead of jumping out of the glass. Intensity and fine detail arrive together on the palate. With 3.6 g/L residual sugar it is properly dry, and 5.8 g/L acidity carries the weight. A bitter, phenolic grip closes things off. And at 13% alcohol, Künstler's Kirchenstück 2021 never feels heavy.

Grape Varieties

Kirchenstück GG 2021 is made from a single grape variety:

Riesling

Rheingau Riesling tends to emphasize body rather than feather-light delicacy, and this wine exemplifies precisely that characteristic. Because the 2021 vintage was allowed to ripen slowly, the fruit aromas are concentrated while the acidity remains intact. Dry, taut, and still generous.

Cellaring Potential

The ageing potential of this Hochheimer Kirchenstück at 15 to 25 years, and the acidity backs that up. Best enjoyed until 2050. Screw cap, so development is slow and steady. Serve at 12 to 14°C, half an hour in a decanter if young.

About Weingut Kunstler

Two rivers meet near Hochheim am Main, and that gives Weingut Künstler's vineyards a slightly more humid microclimate than most of the Rheingau. Around 80% of production is white, Riesling first among them, with smaller plantings of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Grüner Veltliner and Alvarinho. Künstler family winemaking reaches back to the 12th century, though the original estate stood in Untertannowitz, now in the Czech Republic. Franz Künstler re-established it in Hochheim in 1965, and his son Günter, trained at Geisenheim, took over in 1992. VDP membership came in 1994, the former Aschrott estate in 1996. Hochheim soils run through loess, clay, sand, loam, marl and limestone. Dry Rieslings from Domdechaney, Kirchenstück, Hölle and Berg Rottland lead the range. And from Assmannshausen, a red wine enclave in the Rheingau, comes Spätburgunder.

Terroir & Climate

Kirchenstück has been used as a vineyard since 1276 and is located on the eastern edge of Rheingau, at the point where Main and Rhine meet. The soil of Hochheim consists of loess, clay, sand, loam, marl, and limestone. The salty notes and stony texture stem from the limestone and marl. Additionally, due to the proximity of two rivers, the microclimate is slightly more humid, which stretches the ripening period for Riesling.

Winemaking

Kirchenstück is a VDP.Grosse Lage, the highest tier in the VDP classification system, and, in practice, follows the strictest regulations applied to Künstler wines: a specific vineyard, a specific grape variety, and completely dry fermentation. Farming practices are sustainable, and the winery is modern. Screw caps are used instead of corks during bottling to block oxygen ingress and preserve the vivid aromas of citrus and stone.

Food Pairing

Acidity and that savoury, stony grip make Kirchenstück a food Riesling first. The producer points to white meat, fish and shellfish, which is where it lands:

• Pike-perch in brown butter, the acidity cuts straight through it
• Roast chicken with lemon and thyme
• Scallops, seared, nothing sweet on the plate
• Steamed mussels

Skip anything heavily spiced. The wine is dry and savoury, not fruity.
