Named after a gravel deposit rather than a vineyard, Kurt Angerer's Grüner Veltliner Kies 2023 is a dry white wine from Kamptal in Austria, and Kies is simply the German word for the gravel soil it comes from. The name itself embodies the core concept of this wine. Since Angerer processes and bottles the same grapes, grown in different soil types, using the same method, the differences perceived on the palate stem from the soil rather than the winery.
The year 2023 presented many challenges for Austrian growers. Spring rains, uneven ripening, the hottest year on record alongside 2018, and even hail in September. What saved that year was the long, mild autumn that followed the storms, which made the difference between a difficult vintage and a good one.
Across Austria, 2023 whites show a slightly higher alcohol content and a slightly lower acidity than usual. At 12.5%, Kies falls on the moderate side, making it more suitable for enjoying with dinner than as a wine that makes a strong impression. Screw cap, 750ml.
