Vigna Rionda Ester Canale Rosso Langhe Nebbiolo 2023 Giovanni Rosso

Wines from the Vigna Rionda vineyard (Serralunga d'Alba) Giovanni Rosso Vigna Rionda Ester Canale Rosso 2023 is a red wine produced from Piemonte's, the single-varietal plot that has been generating a lot of buzz. Although it comes from the same vineyard as Ester Canale Barolo, it is a different wine. Bottled as Langhe Nebbiolo rather than Barolo, this wine expresses the character of this plot in a more approachable style that can be enjoyed even when young, and therein lies the essence of this wine.

The 2023 vintage was an extreme season for Piemonte. A mild but rainy spring led to a widespread outbreak of downy mildew in the Langhe plot, followed by a heatwave in the August plot where maximum temperatures exceeded 40 °C, and in some areas, the region was hit by hail and torrential rain. Some vines stopped growing entirely, and since some of the berries in the clusters were sunburned, the sorting process became even more critical than in a typical year. After that, October brought favorable weather, sunny days and cool nights, and the harvest in the Nebbiolo plot continued until the end of the month as we waited for the tannins to ripen properly.

Production in the region totaled approximately 750,000 hectoliters, which was generally in line with average years, though some individual grape growers saw yields that were far lower than that. Review of Robert Parker.
