Kellerberg is one of the steep, terraced vineyards of the Wachau, and this dry Riesling wine, produced by F.X. Pichler, perfectly captures its character. It offers aromas of lemon and stony minerality, with a firm and vibrant palate that leaves a long, crisp, and clean finish.
The 2024 harvest began in the first week of September. However, heavy rains and flooding in the middle of September halted the harvest for two weeks. The season had been hot and dry up until then, but more rain fell as autumn set in. Since loess soil retains moisture well, managing it was particularly challenging, making proper drainage and vineyard selection crucial.
Lukas Pichler produces wine from organically grown grapes. Smaragd is the most mature of the Wachau's three grades, ranking above Steinfeder and Federspiel (the latter of which has an alcohol content of 11.5-12.5%).
It is best enjoyed between 2028 and 2045. When opened young it will be even better when decanted.
