Produced from 1 hectare of steep chalky slopes on the outskirts of Chavignol, this dry white Sancerre is a Loire wine, made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc grapes harvested from approximately 40-year-old vines by François Cotat. La Grande Côte sits on Kimmeridgian limestone, and due to the extremely steep slopes, the grapes are harvested by hand.
The year 2023 was expected to be a potentially very bountiful harvest in the Loire region, but there were significant variations in quality among producers. Old vines on a small, steep parcel are one way to regulate yields.
Fermentation takes place using the grapes' own yeast, with gentle stirring during the final stage. The wine is then aged for eight months in 600-liter oak barrels that are already 6 to 8 years old, allowing the oak to contribute texture rather than flavor. The vineyards are not certified organic but are cultivated without pesticides, following organic principles.
Expect notes of citrus, chalk, and a salty finish. Best enjoyed through 2038. For younger bottles, decant for about an hour before serving.
