Les Culs de Beaujeu is a steep slope located above Chavignol. The 2023 vintage, François Cotat's white Sauvignon Blanc produced here, was bottled under the name Vin de France rather than as a Sancerre appellation. The vineyard features plots with a difference in altitude of up to 45% and faces south to southeast on white soil composed of fossilized oyster shells. The vines here are approximately 70 years old.
2023 was a relatively warm year in the Loire region, and while yields were expected to be very high, there were significant variations in quality among producers.
Fermentation is carried out using indigenous yeasts already present on the fruit and in the winery. Aging takes place for 8 months in 600-liter oak barrels that are 6 to 8 years old, so any pronounced oak flavor has already faded. Expect citrus, chalky, and salty notes rather than flashy flavors.
Cotat cultivates a total of approximately 4 hectares of vineyards, of which 3.5 hectares are planted with the Sauvignon Blanc variety and 0.5 hectares with the Pinot Noir variety. The characteristics of small-scale production are fully reflected in the wine.
Best enjoyed through 2036. For younger bottles, decant for about 30 minutes before serving.
