Domaine Vincent Dauvissat's 2018 vintage Chablis Les Clos is a dry white Grand Cru produced in Chablis, a northern region of Burgundy, and was harvested during a bumper crop year. Although the number of clusters was average for the year, the number of grapes per cluster was nearly 25% higher than expected, resulting in a yield approximately 25% higher than projected. This is a more significant issue for the Grand Cru grade than for lower grades, as the VCI reserve system, which allows growers to set aside surplus wine in preparation for future poor harvests, does not apply to Chablis Grands Crus. Any quantity exceeding the permitted harvest quota is sent to distilleries.

The heat and drought determined the rest. The Chablis region recorded about 10 mm of rainfall throughout the summer, and as hot weather and dry conditions persisted until harvest time, sugar levels rose. Consequently, the alcohol content of this bottled wine is approximately 13.5%, which is relatively high for this appellation. Malolactic fermentation was completed by Christmas in 2018, earlier than usual for this vineyard, and the wine was bottled by Christmas 2019.

Les Clos is why this domaine deserves attention. Even in a bountiful, well-ripened vintage, this vineyard maintains its distinctive and elegant character and concentration; the 2018 vintage offers a richer mouthfeel than usual without compromising the wine's firm structure.
