Valdafoz 2023 Descendientes de Jose Palacios

Valdafoz 2023 is a red wine from Bierzo, located in Castilla y León, produced by Descendientes de José Palacios from a steep single vineyard on the slopes of Corullón. Here, steep is the key word. Parts of the slope reach a 70 percent gradient, making the use of machinery completely impossible; therefore, the harvest is done by hand, and sorting takes place right among the vines. This vineyard faces north to northeast, an orientation that used to pose a problem. This is because, during decades of cooler temperatures, the fruit ripened properly only a few times every ten years. However, the situation has changed in recent years as temperatures have risen, and this vineyard now achieves full ripeness much more frequently.

Across Spain, 2023 was a challenging year. Severe drought persisted from the beginning of the year, causing harvest disruptions in many regions. This wine is refreshing rather than heavy, and it showcases the distinctive mineral flavors imparted by the layered slate soil. After partially destemming the grapes, fermentation took place in wooden barrels.

Collectors should note that this is the first commercially released version of this cuvée. It is best enjoyed between 2027 and 2036.
