Made entirely from Tempranillo, the La Cueva del Contador 2023 is a red wine from Rioja Alta, grown and bottled by Contador Benjamin Romeo.
The estate farms 50 hectares of vineyards spread across 60 plots; most of the vines are bush-trained, and Romeo selects rigorously when the harvest season becomes challenging. And 2023 was a capricious year. June started off smoothly, but hail fell in some areas; July stayed cool, August brought a heat wave and rain arrived in September. Nevertheless, Rioja closed out the year with a 10% increase in production.
In the wine cellar, destemmed grapes are fermented in large oak vats, after which the wine is aged for 20 months in brand-new French oak barrels.
It is best enjoyed between 2027 and 2037. If opening a young bottle, decant it for about an hour.
