Contador 2023 is Benjamin Romeo's red blend sourced from Rioja Alta, consisting of 94% Tempranillo and 6% Garnacha, with only 4,200 bottles produced.
The weather was favorable during the June period, though hail fell in some areas; the July period saw cool weather; the August period brought a heat wave; and the September period was marked by rain. Thanks to 50 hectares of old, head-pruned vines (mostly bush-trained) spread across 60 individual plots, Romeo was able to harvest plot by plot.
The grapes are destemmed but uncrushed and fermented in oak vats; the wine is then aged for 20 months in new French barriques (small oak barrels). The aromas are vivid in the glass: ripe plums, dark cherries, and sweet spices stand out. However, it is well-balanced; full-bodied yet elegant, with smooth, silky tannins and a long, flavorful finish.
Because it is rich and intense, it needs time to breathe if opened while young. Decanting is recommended for about 1 to 2 hours. It is best enjoyed between 2027 and 2040.
