A strong effort, the 2020 Branas Grand Poujeaux exhibits aromas of sweet spices, cherries, berries, licorice, loamy soil and toasty new oak. Medium to full-bodied, supple and lively, in a bold and dramatic but nicely balanced style, it will offer a broad drinking window.
This is attractive with a medium to full body, polished and sleek texture, and an array of ripe blackberries, plums, sweet spices and cedar undertones. Some walnut, too. Lingering and flavorful. 60% merlot, 35% cabernet sauvignon and 5% petit verdot.
The 2020 Branas Grand Poujeaux is very composed on the nose with some lovely brambly red fruit, briar, touches of undergrowth and cedar. The oak is very well integrated here. The palate is medium-bodied with sapid black fruit, iodine and white pepper. There is an approachability to this Moulis-en-Médoc that makes it very appealing, though it has the substance to age. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.
Coming from a tiny vineyard in Moulis, the 2020 Château Branas Grand Poujeaux sports a medium-bodied, beautifully concentrated, balanced style offering classic red and black fruits, notes of cedar pencil, tobacco, and leather, ripe tannins, and a great finish. I suspect this will be a smoking value, and the quality here is truly something. I like it today yet see no reason it won't evolve for a solid decade.
