Vinhos Barbeito was founded in 1946 on the island of Madeira by Mário Barbeito. This family-run Madeira wine house is now managed by Ricardo Diogo Vasconcelos de Freitas and is widely regarded as a leader of quality and innovation in the region. The estate abandoned bulk production in favour of bottled wines around 1991 and produces small-batch Madeira from old vineyards and less common grape varieties. Wine critic Jancis Robinson has referred to Barbeito as the “Lafite of Madeira,” in reference to its premium reputation on the island.
