Based on 62% Cabernet Franc, 21% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Merlot, brought up in 20% new French oak, the deep purple 2018 El Alma de Jonata boasts a rocking Cabernet Franc nose of smoked black fruits, tobacco, chocolate, and earth as well as medium to full-bodied richness, ripe tannins, good acidity, and a great finish.
Winemaker Matt Dees continues to fashion world class wines at Jonata. Due to the timing of my visit, the 2018s were tasted from barrel as opposed to bottle, hence the score range for the reviews. Regardless, this is a great vintage for the estate. The wines show the vintage’s fresher, more elegant and seamless style and have similarities to the estate’s 2016s. The 2019 vintage was the last vintage made at the old facility in Buellton, and starting in 2020, all of the wines will be made in a brand-new winery being built on the western edge of the Sta. Rita Hills.

"Singular and dramatic nose of cocoa powder, scorched earth, fresh mint and raspberry preserves. Black plum and cassis on the attack. Pencil shavings, dusty gravel, kalamata olive and lavender. Complex and wonderful convergence of earth, herb and darkness. Ample generosity, but ultimately remains light and fresh, vibrant and lively. Perfumed, chalky and profound. Pushes from generous fruit on the attack to a long and memorable finish. Lovely race to see whether fruit, tannic structure or bright acidity will win. All seem to push for minutes. An ethereal and driven Alma. A seemingly unique combination: aromatic and tense 2008 meets the black fruit-driven 2009 powerhouse." Matt Dees, Winemaker
Jonata's Cabernet Franc-based red is so elegant and so gorgeous. Sweet floral notes, cedar, mocha, grilled herbs, licorice and sweet pipe tobacco give the 2018 striking aromatic intensity and depth that builds with air. Bright and beautifully focused to its core, the Alma is positively striking in 2018.
