Wines from Numanthia

Numanthia

The winery is located in the Toro region of Spain's Castilla y Léon. Numanthia was founded in 1998 by the Eguren family. Numanthia quickly became known for its unique expressions of the Tinto Fino grape (Tempranillo). The winery is now part of the French LVMH conglomerate.

A unique factor of Numanthia is the vines; some are up to 200 years old! The vines are deeply rooted in a sandy rock soil. This way the vines manage to get water, even during dry spells. Conditions in Toro are very extreme, with hot summers and very cold winters. The locals sometimes describe the climate as 9 months of winter and 3 months of hell… A total of 200 plots are in use, all of which are cultivated organically. All these factors result in a low yield per hectare, which actually benefits the quality of the bunches!

The grapes are first destemmed by hand and then crushed by foot. All wines are fermented and aged in French barriques. The duration and the proportion of new wood vary per cuvée and vintage. The portfolio consists of three wines: Termes, Termanthia and Numanthia. The latter is the winery’s showpiece. It is a blend of 100 different plots and the best terroirs. During maceration, the ‘cap’ of the wine is punched down by foot twice a day. The maturation that follows takes an average of 20 months. The result is a beautiful and very concentrated wine.

Numanthia has proven its worth in a short time and is now definitely one of the best wineries in Spain! The best vintages are 2003, 2004 and 2009.
