History of wines from Stellenbosch

The region's history dates to 1679, making it South Africa's second-oldest settlement after Cape Town. Founded by Governor Simon van der Stel, Stellenbosch became a refuge for French Huguenot Protestants seeking sanctuary from religious persecution in Europe. These settlers, arriving in the 1690s, initiated vineyard cultivation, laying the foundation for Stellenbosch's viticultural legacy, which now hosts nearly one-fifth of all vines planted in South Africa.

The terroir of Stellenbosch wines

Stellenbosch has vineyards on mountains with mineral-rich decomposed granite soils over 600 million years old. The region's relatively hot, dry climate is tempered by maritime influence from False Bay, with cooling sea breezes.

Cabernet Sauvignon is perfect for Stellenbosch's well-draining ancient soils. It produces elegant and complex wines with rich layers of dark-red berries and fine tannins suitable for long term cellaring. Chenin Blanc, known for its versatility, flourishes in the warm and arid conditions.

The classifications of Stellenbosch wines

Stellenbosch falls under the "Wine of Origin" (W.O.) classification, like all wines in South Africa. Like France's Appellation or the American Viticultural Area in the US, it ensure and guards the unique characteristics of each region or even vineyard. Stellenbosch has seven wards (a South African designtaed region), including Banghoek, Bottelary, Devon Valley, Jonkershoek Valley, Papegaaiberg, Polkadraai Hills, and Simonsberg-Stellenbosch. The Western Cape, with famous W.O.s such as Paarl, Stellenbosch, and Franschhoek, further emphasizes the importance of regional distinctions.
