Wines from Niepoort

Niepoort

One of the most successful producers of Portuguese Port wines is Niepoort, a more than five generations family-owned Portuguese winery! As a loyal representative of the famous Portuguese Port wines, Niepoort wine is best characterized for its sweet and full-bodied flavours. One of the most regarded Niepoort wines is the Niepoort Bioma Vinha Velha Vintage Port 2016, a profound, unfiltered and fruity port wine.

Niepoort was founded in 1842 by Franciscus Marius Niepoort, a Dutch immigrant who started his career in the wine industry as a merchant of exclusive port wines. Franciscus Marius Niepoort passed away in 1887 as a respected man and passed on his legacy to his then 39-year old son Eduard Karel Jackob, after which the family winery Niepoort was well-maintained for generations long. For many years, Niepoort remained its operations as a Port wine distributor without having ownership of an own vineyard. But after Eduard Dirk Niepoort, the fifth generation of Niepoort ancestors family line joined the firm in 1987, things changed for good.

Shortly after Dirk’s appointment to the family business, the Niepoort family reached a big milestone by the acquirement of their own vineyards. In 1987 the family acquired the 30 hectares “Quinta de Nápoles” estate, and one year later they purchased the nine hectares “Quinta do Carril” estate, on which they established their very first vineyards. This meant a new time era for Niepoort! The Niepoort vineyards are covered with predominantly Port Red Blend vines, followed by Portuguese Red Blend, Portuguese White Blend and a small amount of some various other vines.

Niepoort produces predominantly Port wines, and also a smaller range of table wines and dry wines. Niepoort is currently still under the leadership of Dirk Niepoort and his sister Verena Niepoort, who successfully continued the family legacy!
