The terroir of Barbera d'Asti
To achieve optimal ripening the vineyards are planted on rolling hills with excellent sun exposure but no higher than 650 meters. Protected from spring frost the best vines grow in the middle of the hill. There are differences in soil types throughout the region: sandy soils close to the Tanaro River yield lighter fruitier wines, while limestone-rich soils in the north produce wines that age deeply.
Barbera Superiore d'Asti
The alcohol content distinguishes Barbera d'Asti Superiore from Barbera d'Asti. Both are DOCG-certified, however Barbera d'Asti must have at least 11.5% alcohol and Barbera d'Asti Superiore must have at least 12.5%.
