Tasting Note Berg Roseneck GG 2021

On the nose, aromas of ripe banana and citrus zest emerge, with chalky nuances lingering behind the fruit. The Berg Roseneck GG 2021 contains 7 g/L of residual sugar, but compared to its total acidity of 6.6 g/L, it comes across as dry rather than sweet. With an alcohol content of 12%, it feels light on the palate, with firm fruit flavors and acidity doing the pushing. It's perfect for enjoying with food right now, yet it's robust enough to continue developing over time.

Berg Roseneck GG Composition: 100% Riesling

This is a typical for the Rheingau, where nearly 80% of the region's vineyards are planted with this variety. Riesling meticulously reflects the characteristics of the vineyard, which is the very essence of the single-vineyard Grosses Gewächs.

Cellaring Potential

This wine's aging potential is 18-25 years, and its acidity supports this assessment. It's best enjoyed by 2032.

Decanting is not necessary. Serve Berg Roseneck GG 2021 at 12-14°C, a temperature that is cool but not too cold. Otherwise, the aromas will fade.

About Weingut Kunstler

Two rivers meet near Hochheim am Main, and that gives Weingut Künstler's vineyards a slightly more humid microclimate than most of the Rheingau. Around 80% of production is white, Riesling first among them, with smaller plantings of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Grüner Veltliner and Alvarinho. Künstler family winemaking reaches back to the 12th century, though the original estate stood in Untertannowitz, now in the Czech Republic. Franz Künstler re-established it in Hochheim in 1965, and his son Günter, trained at Geisenheim, took over in 1992. VDP membership came in 1994, the former Aschrott estate in 1996. Hochheim soils run through loess, clay, sand, loam, marl and limestone. Dry Rieslings from Domdechaney, Kirchenstück, Hölle and Berg Rottland lead the range. And from Assmannshausen, a red wine enclave in the Rheingau, comes Spätburgunder.

Terroir & Climate

Berg Roseneck is located on a steep slope above Rüdesheim. The soil in this section is a mixture of slate, quartzite, sandstone, gravel, and loess, and the slope faces south. The warmth is amplified twofold: the Taunus hills block the cold winds, and the Rhine reflects sunlight toward the vines. In this cool, continental climate, Riesling ripens slowly, and it is precisely this slow ripening process that gives Berg Roseneck GG its acidity.

Winemaking

Here, the Trocken style has been chosen. This VDP.Grosse Lage wine has almost no sweetness to soften the palate, so the flavors must be driven solely by fruit and acidity. Künstler combines environmentally friendly vineyard practices with modern winery facilities, and Berg Roseneck GG is sealed with a screw cap to ensure the citrus aromas are preserved in the bottle.

Food Pairing

Such firm acidity requires flavorful fat to cut through it. Fish caught in local rivers are the perfect match: pikeperch with brown butter or smoked trout with horseradish cream are excellent choices. Roast chicken with a crispy skin also serves this purpose. Additionally, a mild Thai curry pairs well with Berg Roseneck GG, as its dry finish prevents the spice flavors from becoming overly intense.
