The terroir of Saint-Joseph wines
Saint-Joseph’s terroir is highly diverse due to its size. The best vineyard sites are located on steep slopes with granite, gneiss and schist soils. This enhances the wines’ complexity. Other areas feature limestone or ancient alluvial soils. The finest grapes often come from vineyards near the Hermitage hill, where wines share a similar though lighter style.
