Winespectator (93)

A cool, ultra-spicy and restrained nose features notes of both red and blue pinot fruit, sandalwood, violet and a hint of hoisin. The delineated medium weight flavors possess a silky mid-palate though there is plenty of punch to the concentrated, intense, balanced and highly complex finish that delivers outstanding length where a hint of bitter cherry appears. This classy effort is really lovely and exceptionally stylish. If this can add more depth with a few years of bottle age my score may be overly conservative.

Bright red-ruby. Aromas of cassis, blackberry, bitter chocolate and smoky minerals. Juicy, precise blackberry and licorice flavors convey much more cut and inner-mouth tension than the Clos Vougeot. Densely packed, concentrated and plenty ripe, showing a lovely balance of fruit, sweetness and energy. Finishes with firm tannins and good supporting minerality. The Clos Vougeot was to have been bottled soon after my visit but this wine will probably be the last to be finished. This fruit was picked on September 27 at 12. 9% potential alcohol and chaptalized to 13. 2%; the yield was 41 hectoliters per hectare.
