Wines from Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier

Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier

Domaine J-F. Mugnier  (Château de Chambolle – Musigny)

Château de Chambolle – Musigny has been the home of the Mugnier family since 1863 and has been regarded as the Château, although other persons were claiming that honor too.

Up to 1978, the vineyards were contracted out to Faiveley and Bruno Clair (who sold the wine in bulk). Since 1985, Frédéric Mugnier, the fifth generation of the family, has been in charge of the domaine. Until 1998 he combined the management of the estate together with his job as an airline pilot, but nowadays he focuses fully on the domaine.

The vines are treated more or less organically, only the treatment against mildew (twice a year) is not chemical-free. Their philosophy is to approach the purest expression of nature both in viticulture and wine making. The style of the wines is characterized by the respect of terroir, the elegance of richness without heaviness, harmony and the fact that they are capable to last a long period of time.

The top wines are: Musigny Grand Cru (1.13 Ha), Bonnes Mares Grand Cru (0.36 Ha), Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru “Les Amoureuses” (0.53 Ha) and Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru “Les Fuées” (0.71 Ha), all marvelous plots. But the domaine also exclusively owns the monopole Nuits - St. - Georges 1er Cru “Clos de la Maréchale”, which is the only vineyard in his portfolio that has been planted with both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes.
