Vinous (97)

The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet La Romanée 1er Cru is more backward on the nose than the La Grande Ruchottes. This is sulking away for the moment, but given the propitious vineyard in question, this signals its long-term trajectory. The palate is very well-balanced with a fine line of acidity, very intense and focused. Quite Puligny, not quite Bâtard-like on the finish. Outstanding…but be patient.

Burghound (95)

Here too there is a subtle if still perceptible dollop of oak setting off the equally vaguely exotic aromas of white peach, citrus confit, Asian-style spiced tea and a pretty hint of acacia blossom. There is impressively volume and mid-palate concentration to the beautifully textured and almost painfully intense medium-bodied flavors that brim with minerality and dry extract, all wrapped in a hugely long, complex and impeccably well-balanced finale. This is both stylish and classy and highly recommended.

La Romanée combines something of all of the previous three near perfect 1ers Crus. There is a noble reduction to the nose, more energy than Grandes Ruchottes, more refinement than Caillerets, but really just a great wine in its own right. It is slowly - not that slowly - but definitely steadily building in all departments with exquisite balance. The time that the combination of the fruit, floral, herbal and citrus flavours combined continue on the palate…. Drink from 2029-2040. Tasted Nov 2023.
