Von Neipperg is a well-known wine family from Germany. The family has been producing wine in Germany since the 13th century. In 1971, the Von Neipperg family acquired the Canon la Gaffeliere estate in Bordeaux. Today, this winery is run by Stephan von Neipperg. Canon la Gaffeliere is located on the right bank of Bordeaux in the village of Saint-Emilion. In 2012, the château was included in the Premier Grand Cru Classé of the Saint-Emilion classification.
The vineyards are located at the foot of the mountain on the south side of Saint-Emilion. The winery has just under 20 hectares in production. This area is planted with 50% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. All vines have an average age of 50 years. The soil consists of limestone clay and sand. This soil type holds water easily and has good drainage. These are exactly the properties that the grapes love. Since 2015, the winery has been officially certified organic. After the grapes are harvested by hand, the bunches are carefully sorted and destemmed.
The cellar is organized in a way that each plot can be fermented separately. To properly preserve their unique character, the grapes are not crushed, but the bunches go straight into the barrel. The grapes enter the barrel by gravity, which also helps to preserve the natural flavors. Next, the fermentation starts in large oak barrels. After this, the wine is aged in barriques. Even at this stage of the process, all plots are still treated separately. The final blend is only put together after 15 - 18 months of maturation.
The impressive portfolio of several more successful wineries shows that the Von Neipperg family knows how to make fantastic wines. This includes Château Guiraud, Capaia, La Mondotte, Château Peyreau, Clos Marsalette, Clos de l'Oratoire and Château d 'Aguilhe. The winery's best vintages are 2015, 2017 and 2019.
