Neusiedlersee, situated in the northern section of Burgenland, stands as a key wine region in eastern Austria, spanning of vineyards along the northern and eastern shores of Neusiedler Lake. The terrain features a diverse mix of loess, black earth, gravel, and sandy sediment.
This region's soils and climates vary significantly, from low-lying slopes near the lake—affected by fog that promotes botrytis—to drier inclines with sandy-loam and gravel further inland.
Neusiedler Lake's presence moderates the typically hot, continental climate during the growing season. The region's standout wines are the renowned sweet Prädikatswein. In autumn, the humidity and fog around the lake create ideal conditions for the desired "noble rot" in the grapes. The primary grape is Zweigelt, and is followed by Grüner Veltliner, Welschriesling, Blaufränkisch, and Chardonnay.
