Classifications and terroir of wines from Burgenland

Burgenland is one of the warmest regions in Austria and is ideal for red wine due to its favourable climate and soil conditions. The natural environment plays a crucial role in wine production, with different grapes thriving in specific soil types. The region is divided into four main regions, each with unique terroir characteristics, which include:

  • Burgenland is home to the famous Lake Neusiedl, known for its steppe landscape and as a prime location for sweet wines such as Beerenauslese (BA) and Trockenbeerenauslese (TBA). The warm climate and humidity promote the development of noble rot, allowing the production of high-quality wines.
  • Leithaberg DAC is where the best white wines of Burgerland come from, especially from the limestone soils in that area. Blaufränkisch, a blue grape variety is grown throughout this area and does very well. There is also the sweet Ruster Ausbruch which is one of the area's and Austria's iconic wines for centuries.
  • Mittelburgenland DAC is known for its unique combination of the wild berry aroma of Blaufränkisch grapes and the warm chalky clay soil. The heavy loamy soil in this area adds depth to the Blaufränkisch wines. The Leitha Range is perfect for white wines such as Pinot Blanc, while Blaufränkisch benefits from its terroir. Blauer Zweigelt thrives in the eastern part, while the microclimate of the Seewinkel region is ideal for sweet wines due to the high humidity that promotes noble rot.
  • Eisenberg DAC is the smallest wine region and is known for wines with a strong expression of the environment. It partly falls under the Styrian climate, which is suitable for Blaufränkisch grapes and produces elegant red wines. One of Burgenland’s famous sweet wine, called Ruster Ausbruch, contributes to the region's identity.
