Words of Whisky (92)

Nose: Somewhat austere but with gentle wood smoke, wet wool, velvety wax and mineral notes too, but also juicy stone fruits, lychee and orange zest. Finally some white pepper, hazelnuts and hemp rope. Extremely well integrated.
Taste: A waxy, almost oily mouthfeel with plenty of salty, pepper-y maritime notes accumulated by seaweed, iodine and damp drift wood. Also salted liquorice, a hint of tar and gentle medicinal peat. But also soft notes of crème caramel, rum-soaked raisins and stewed fruits to give it some more depth and sweetness.
Finish: Long with lingering notes of breakfast tea, ashes and salt. Delicious.

It's vibrant and coastal, but with a depth, richness and complexity you only find in these long-aged single malts. A throwback whisky worthy of the Talisker brand. And certainly a treat to taste, (although I can't really separate the influence of the marine casks). Even for as privileged and spoiled a whisky drinker as I am, drinking 1970s Talisker is a rarity.

Maturation on Marine Charred Casks:

What sets the Talisker 44 Years Old apart is its maturation on Marine Charred Casks. The casks, exposed to the salt-laden air of the sea, impart a unique character to the whisky. The marriage of Talisker's peated spirit with the influence of the maritime environment creates a nautical symphony of flavors that sets this expression apart from its peers.

Tasting Notes:

Upon uncorking, the nose is greeted with a rich tapestry of aromas. The peat smoke characteristic of Talisker intertwines with maritime notes, brine, and a subtle hint of charred oak. The complexity invites enthusiasts to delve into the depths of the whisky's character.

The palate is a revelation of flavors that have matured for an impressive 44 years. Maritime influences dance with the peaty core, creating a harmonious blend of sea spray, charred wood, and a touch of iodine. Layers of complexity unfold, showcasing the depth that can only be achieved through time and the influence of the marine environment.

The finish is enduring and satisfying, leaving a lingering memory of the sea. Charred oak, hints of seaweed, and a touch of salinity contribute to a final act that invites contemplation and appreciation for the marriage of time and the sea.
