Campbeltown, a picturesque coastal town on the southern tip of the Kintyre Peninsula in Scotland, holds a special place in the world of whisky. Known for its rich whisky heritage and distinct maritime influence, Campbeltown is home to a handful of renowned distilleries, including Springbank, Glen Scotia, and Glengyle. Springbank, known for its traditional production methods and commitment to quality, brings depth and complexity to the blend. Its whisky is renowned for its briny, maritime character, with hints of peat and a subtle fruitiness that adds layers of flavor.
Glen Scotia, another historic distillery in Campbeltown, offers a contrasting profile with a focus on fruity and spicy notes. The whiskies from Glen Scotia often exhibit a rich, sweet palate with flavors of orchard fruits, vanilla, and spices, providing a delightful balance to the blend.
Glengyle, the youngest distillery in Campbeltown, adds a touch of vibrancy and freshness to the mix. Its whiskies are known for their lighter, more floral character, complemented by subtle citrus notes and a gentle sweetness.
An Experience Similar to Drinking a Single Malt:

Whether you are a seasoned whisky aficionado or an eager enthusiast, experiencing a Campbeltown Loch is akin to immersing yourself in the world of single malts, with the added pleasure of exploring the distinct character of Campbeltown. Raise a glass and savor the magic of Campbeltown in every sip.
Nose: a sourness is markedly in the foreground. Kiwi and lemon with sourdough. A bit of funky notes (wet carpet, wood oil and slightly rubbery smoke), clay and chalky minerals. Then hints of leather with stewed orchard fruits in the background. Nicely off-beat, typically Campbeltown.
Mouth: quite oily, with the same lemony notes and wet gravel. Dark but lightweight smoke. Faint metallic hints. Cinnamon and black pepper. Then it moves towards more savoury notes like coffee, beef stock and light medicinal notes, as well as some dark chocolate in the very end.
Finish: quite long, with more funky notes again, bittersweet herbs and cold smoke.
Pretty good value again, with a good sense of the dirty, mineral and lightly smoky character of Springbank and Glen Scotia. If you don’t manage to grab Springbank bottles, this may be the perfect introduction to what Campbeltown is all about. A bit young though.
