Dark, dense and enormously slatey, this is a mind-blowingly concentrated dry riesling for this challenging vintage. Turns everything that’s been said about 2024 upside down on the medium-bodied palate. The mouthfeel is really breathtaking. Giant energy and finesse in the no-holds-barred finish. The first vintage of this wine. Limited production. Drinkable now, but best from 2027.
The 2024 Riesling Detzemer Maximiner Klosterlay GG Limited Edition shimmers gently with stone, orange peel and a touch of cumin-scented apricot. This aromatic wine is superbly creamy, helped along by a second-use 300-liter barrel and the fact that this stopped at 10 g/L of residual sugar. It is generous, smooth, charming, seductive and rather rounded. (Bone-dry)
The 2024er Detzemer Maximiner Klosterlay Riesling GG is a bone-dry wine (with 3 g/l of residual sugar) made from fruit picked on 55-year-old vines which was fermented and aged for part in a Stöckinger cask and for part in stainless steel. It immediately captures one’s attention as it shows a direct and superbly aromatic nose of pink grapefruit, yellow peach, cinnamon, lemon, minty herbs, smoke, and lime tree. The wine proves rather ample and juicy on the palate, and only gradually delivers more intensity and focus. The finish, while still being marked by an underlying smoothness, is nicely intense and very long. This appealing GG will certainly benefit from a few years in bottle to integrate all its elements and fully shine. It is made for lovers of more flamboyant and riper style of dry Riesling.
