The 2023 Latour à Pomerol opens with aromas of spices, dark berries, licorice and rose petals, discreetly framed by oak. Medium- to full-bodied, it is dense and firmly structured, built around a serious chassis of powdery tannins that carry through to a long, composed finish. This is a wine that will reward patience, requiring time in the cellar to soften and fully articulate its potential.
A serious nose showing depth of fruit and complexity, with dark cherries, black plums, minerals, roasted spices and touches of citrus and mushrooms. Medium-bodied and well built, with solid fruit and firm, fine-grained tannins. Long and composed. 100% merlot. This shows merlot approachability, but it will get more complex in two to four years.
The 2023 Latour à Pomerol has a clean and pure bouquet with raspberry and blackberry fruit, mixed with incense and lightly pressed iris flower aromas. Quite understated in style. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, a lovely core of red fruit laced with white pepper and thyme, cohesive and harmonious, building toward the nicely structured finish. This is slightly above my expectations from barrel and this is reflected in my score. Excellent.
All Merlot from deeper gravelly and clay soils and aged in 50% new French oak, the 2023 Château Latour A Pomerol sports a deep ruby/plum hue as well as ripe black fruits, graphite, smoky tobacco, and chocolate. It's rich, medium to full-bodied, compact, and firm, with an inward style that's going to need 4-5 years of bottle age. It should be long-lived. Drink 2029-2053.
