The 2004 Dom Ruinart Rosé, produced by Ruinart in Reims, is based on Grand Cru Chardonnay, and is a Prestige Cuvée that incorporates a generous blend of the still red wine Pinot Noir, produced in Sillery. The proportion of red wine is unusually high, resulting in a rosé with substantial body rather than a pale aperitif-style pink hue.
The year 2004 brought a tremendous harvest to Champagne. Flowering occurred early, the vines bore more fruit than ever before, and since the potential yield far exceeded the limits allowed by appellation regulations, growers left the grapes in good condition on the vines and began selective harvesting from 18 September. While there were concerns about the wine becoming diluted, the grapes turned out to be well-ripened with clean fruit aromas and good acidity, and most houses declared the vintage.
Ruinart aged this bottle on the lees (used yeast cells that add texture and toasty aromas) for over 10 years, then disgorged it in February 2016 at a dosage of 4 grams per liter. It has low sugar content, has undergone long-term aging, and has an alcohol content of 12.5%. Enjoy it at 10-12°C in a suitable white wine glass rather than a narrow flute. It will be at its best until 2035.
