Viña Tondonia Blanco Reserva 2014 is a white Rioja produced by López de Heredia, made from Viura and Malvasía grapes grown in the Viña Tondonia vineyard, located along the Ebro. Rioja's Regulatory Council rated the 2014 vintage Good. That year, the weather across much of Western Europe was unpredictable, with alternating sunshine and clouds, and hail in some areas. In keeping with the winery's tradition, this wine was aged in oak barrels for several years before release.
The 2014 Viña Tondonia Blanco Reserva has a bright golden color, almost fluorescent, a complex and nuanced nose reminiscent of the 2017 Viña Gravonia that I tasted next to it, toasty, smoky and spicy, with mushroom and earth, pollen and herbal tea notes, reminiscent of the aromas in their old caves. 2014 was not an easy vintage, and some wines were diluted because of the abundant rains before or during the harvest. This is the usual blend of Viura with 10% Malvasía Riojana from vines averaging 63 years of age on white soils with abundant rocks. It fermented in ancient oak vats with indigenous yeasts and matured for six years, probably more, in well-seasoned, neutral American oak barrels in their caves, which have a big effect on the wines (the longer the time in them, the longer the effect). It has 12.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.3 and 6.6 grams of acidity. It fills your mouth with pungent flavors, despite being medium-bodied and having an ethereal quality about it, and it's very long and tasty and finishes almost salty, with an umami feeling, dry and chalky. Delicious, clean and still young, it should age effortlessly. 18,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in December 2022.

Aromas of quince and dried apple blend with notes of toasted almonds, and thanks to years of aging in old American oak barrels, hints of beeswax are also present. Viura provides the backbone of acidity, while Malvasía adds a touch of richness and floral notes. The texture is rich, yet the finish is dry and savoury, with nutty notes taking precedence over fruity ones. The 2014 Viña Tondonia Blanco Reserva is excellent to drink now, and thanks to its acidity, there is no concern that its quality will decline anytime soon.
It is best enjoyed by 2036. The acidity of Viura and its long aging in oxidative oak barrels play a key role in this. Serve at 10-12°C, and let it breathe for about an hour after opening.
Almost nothing has changed at López de Heredia in nearly 150 years. Don Rafael López de Heredia y Landeta started building in Haro in 1877, making it the oldest winery in the town and one of the first three in all of Rioja. Four generations later the family still owns it, with María José López de Heredia in charge. All 170 hectares sit in Rioja Alta, and no grapes come in from outside, unusual in a region where buying from small growers is normal. Viña Tondonia, roughly 100 hectares along the Ebro, is the best known of the sites, alongside Bosconia, Cubillo and Gravonia. Reds can spend six to eight years in large American oak casks, coopered in-house, then more years in bottle before release. No filtration. Very little intervention at all.
Viña Tondonia is located on the banks of the Ebro River in Rioja Alta and consists of clay, limestone, and gravel soils. Because the Atlantic's humidity meets the warmth of the Mediterranean here, Viura ripens slowly and retain their acidity well.
Aged in large American oak barrels for a period far exceeding the minimum aging requirement for Reserva, Tondonia Blanco develops savory nutty aromas and subtle oxidative characteristics. It is not filtered. It then ages in the bottle for several more years before it leaves Haro.
Aged in oak barrels, it has a deep flavor and is on the dry side, making it a good match for richer dishes than most white wines.
It also pairs well with cream-based sauces. This is because the wine's rich flavor profile can easily handle the richness of the sauce.
