I loved Villard's 2017 Cotes Rotie le Gallet Blanc, which he blends from several lieux-dits toward the northern end of the appellation. Notes of mocha, herb, pepper and plum combine explosively on the nose, while the palate is full-bodied and intense without being overly weighty. Creamy-textured, rich and layered, this finishes with impressive persistence and grip for a wine that's so approachable now.
This has a very intense and punchy feel with very vibrant red plums and cherries, arranged in a fresh, spicy and quite minerally nose. The palate has a smoky edge with graphite and succulent dark berries and plum, framed in gently spicy oak.
100% Syrah.
Tasted blind. Strong medicinal character on the nose with a vegetal, cabbage sort of aroma – perhaps something reductive? Sweet black fruit on the nose, well-integrated structure with finely ground tannins. Esoteric flavour range, but there is enough fruit to balance. (RH)
