Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste
Château Grand Puy Lacoste is one of the oldest wineries in the Médoc. Its history goes back to the 16th century. The name Grand Puy Lacoste is a combination of the old term puy, meaning hillock, and the family name of the owners of the château.
Since its foundation in the 16th century, the winery has been owned by only a few families. In 1930, the castle with the vineyards was handed over to Raymond Dupin. Just before his death, he sold his property to the current owner, François-Xavier Borie. Mr Borie has invested heavily in the winery to continuously improve the quality.
Grand Puy Lacoste is included in the famous Bordeaux classification of 1855. The winery falls into the fifth category: 5ème Grand Gru classé. Since this classification, the size of the winery has not changed, which is very rare. However, a major renovation took place in 2004. Both the cellars and the estate were totally revamped.
The planting consists of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. The vineyards are located in the municipality appellation of Pauillac on a ridge, which was called Puy in the old dialect. The vineyard plateau is on average 20 meters above sea level. The combination of the location, the pebble soil and the right vineyard management produce grapes of very good quality. The wines are traditionally fermented and aged. For example, the wines are usually aged for 16 to 18 months in French oak barrels. The part new wood is 70%.
The Lacoste Borie is the second wine of Grand Puy Lacoste. This wine was first produced in 1982. The wines are made in a classic Bordeaux style: full-bodied, with good tannin structure and a long aging potential.
The exceptional vintages of Château Grand Puy Lacoste are: 1990, 1996, 2000, 2005, 2006, 2009, 2010, 2015, 2016 and 2018.
