Chateau Calon Segur
Château Calon Ségur is a French winery in the Saint-Estèphe appellation in Bordeaux. The winery is part of the Bordeaux troisième Grand Cru Classé classification. The name Calon comes from the former owner in the 12th century, when Monseigneur de Calon owned the estate. Later, the estate was sold to Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur, and that is how the name Calon Ségur came about. After a few generations, the winery came into the hands of Marquis de Ségur. Marquis is certainly no stranger to the region, he also owned Château Latour and Lafite. The label of the bottle shows a large heart, this heart refers to the statement of Marquis: 'I produce my wine at Château Lafite and Latour, but my heart is at Château Calon Ségur'.
The vineyard area consists of 50 hectares and the planting consists mainly of Cabernet Sauvignon, followed by Merlot. A small part is intended for Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The vineyard is divided into three large blocks. The soil consists of a combination of rocks, gravel, sand and clay. Plus, the soil contains a special type of clay, namely a mix of blue and black clay. The size of the winery has hardly changed since the classification in 1855.
In the cellar, the wines mature on average for 1.5 years in French oak. The proportion of new wood is often between 90 and 100%. A second wine is also produced, this wine was formerly called Marquis de Calon, but today this wine is marketed under the name Le Marquis de Calon Ségur. A third wine has recently been added, which is sold under two different names: La Chapelle de Calon and St. Estèphe de Calon Ségur.
The wines are robust, complex and have a long aging potential. Of the most recent vintages, 2016, 2018 and 2019 are top vintages.
