Wines from Castello Luigi

Castello Luigi

The estate of Castello Luigi is close to the Italian border, in the village Besazio. The winery is located in a beautiful castle surrounded by its vineyards. The planting consists of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Chardonnay. Luigi Zanini offers two well-crafted wines of high quality.

Castello Luigi is a relatively young winery which was purchased in 1988. With the purchase of an old farmhouse came a land of approximately 43.000 square meters, of which about 30.000 had the perfect soil for cultivating wine. After readying the three hectares of land for viticulture, Luigi Zanini dedicated two hectares to the cultivation of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, and one hectare to the production of Chardonnay.
The soil where the vines were planted consists of limestone, tuff and sand, making the ground perfect for viticulture.

Castello Luigi currently makes two wines, a Bianco and a Rosso. The Rosso is a typical "Bordeaux" blend, containing predominantly Merlot with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc in the final blend. These wines are complete in the style of Red Bordeaux, containing the black fruits, as well as the silky tannins. With a production of approximately 10.000 bottles each year, and an ageing time of at least 18 months in oak barrels, the Rosso is certainly a wine worth the try.

The Bianco is made from 100% Chardonnay and due to only having 1 hectare to work with, these bottles are relatively rare, only an average of 2.500 bottles are made annually. Due to the calcerous and sandy soil, the grapes retain some of their freshness from the terroir. The ageing happens on oak barrels for at least 10 months, after which the wines will age another 18 months before being sold. This offers a beautiful Chardonnay with freshness and floral notes woven into a complex and full-bodied wine.
