The best wines from Tarragona

Tarragona's vineyards trace back to the time of the Romans, as they exported strong, sweet, fortified wines to Rome. The French later took over this trade, turning Tarragona into a major wine hub. This wine was particularly useful for the purpose of blending (especially with French wines). As Algeria gained independence and stopped wine production, Tarragona's trade prospered.

Tarragona-DO, with its distinct climatic features and the pronounced influence of the sea, intertwined with its undulating landscapes and exceptional soils, culminates in the production of wines characterized by their smoothness, freshness, and quintessentially Mediterranean essence.

The terroir of Tarragona wines

Alt Camp, Baix Camp, Ribera d'Ebre, and Tarragonès are four comarques (administrative divisions) within the province of Tarragona in Catalonia:

  • Camp de Tarragona: It encircles the city within a 30-kilometer radius, to 200 meters above sea level. Vineyards, elevating from 40m to 195m, have soils of loamy textures with limestone, with alluvial sedimentary rocks.
  • Ribera d'Ebre: Stretching south and west along the Ebro River, plateaus at 100 to 400 meters above sea level. The Ebro Valley, at 344ft (105m), has a soil primarily of alluvial sedimentary rocks.

The grapes of wines from Tarragona

While traditional fortified wines like late-harvest Garnacha and lighter Moscatel de Tarragona are present, most grapes go into making Cava, with the eastern part overlapping with the Cava designation in Penedes. However, the area excels in exclusive Spanish grape varieties. Whites feature some of the widely know grapes Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, but also the less known grapes such as Macabeo, Parellada, and Xarel.lo are widely used. Reds range from light to bold, using Carignan (Samsó), Grenache, Tempranillo, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Monastrell. These red grapes also make delicious rosé wines. Today, Tarragona Classico wine is still made, focusing more on quality over quantity.
