Located in Catalonia, northern Spain, Montsant is about 50 miles inland from Tarragona and roughly 110 miles west of Barcelona.

Montsant wines have roots tracing back to Roman times. Even the renowned writer, Pliny, praised Montsant's wines as "some of the best wine in the Empire." These wines were therefor exported to Roman cities throughout the empire.

Because of the nearby harbours at the Reus and Tarragona's coast, Monsant wines could be exported , peaking in the mid-1800s.

The phylloxera outbreak caused severe damage, but it initiated the formation of wine cooperatives, aiding in the region's development and population growth.

The grapes of wines from Montsant

In Montsant, the dominant grapes are Garnacha grapes, known as Garnatxa in Catalan, which comes in red and white, followed by Cariñena, which is often blended with Garnacha or used alone. Although the region produces various types of wine—red, white, rosé, fortified, and even Kosher wines—Montsant is particularly famous for its red wines.

Over the past 20 years, Montsant wines have gained a strong reputation for being fantastic value for money, especially when compared to the much larger Priorat wines.

The region's vines enjoy intense sun during the day and cooler nights, aiding even and delayed grape maturation.
