Located in Catalonia, northern Spain, Montsant is about 50 miles inland from Tarragona and roughly 110 miles west of Barcelona.
Montsant wines have roots tracing back to Roman times. Even the renowned writer, Pliny, praised Montsant's wines as "some of the best wine in the Empire." These wines were therefor exported to Roman cities throughout the empire.
Because of the nearby harbours at the Reus and Tarragona's coast, Monsant wines could be exported , peaking in the mid-1800s.
The phylloxera outbreak caused severe damage, but it initiated the formation of wine cooperatives, aiding in the region's development and population growth.
