Morellino di Scansano
Morellino di Scansano is located in the coastal region of Maremma, in southern Tuscany. The warm Mediterranean climate, with a combination of lots of sunshine and cooling sea breezes from the Tyrrhenian Sea, guarantees a balanced ripening of the grapes in the vineyards. The terroir consists of sand, clay, and limestone.
Morellino di Scansano is primarely made from Sangiovese (also called Morellino) and is often blended with other permitted grapes in the DOC. The wine has a deep ruby color, with aroma's of ripe red and black fruit, floral elements, spices and Mediterranean herbs. The wines are smooth and well-structured, with soft tannins and a nice acidity.
Compared to other Tuscan Sangiovese-based wines, Morellino di Scansano is fruitier and more approachable in its youth, but is a perfect example of the Maremma terroir.
