Dornfelder
Dornfelder is a blue grape that originated in Germany. It was bred in 1955 by August Herold, crossing Helfensteiner and Heroldrebe, with the goal of creating a high-quality red grape suited to Germany’s cooler climates. Today, Dornfelder is the second most planted red grape in Germany, particularly in Pfalz and Rheinhessen.
Dornfelder wines can be dry to semi-sweet. The more concentrated wines are in most cases barrel-aged for complexity.
Wines made from Dornfelder grapes are in many cases deep, dark colored with a medium to full body. The acidity is moderate to high.
Taste
Fruity and very aromatic intensity: blackberries, cherries, plums, and blackcurrants. Floral notes include violets and elderflowers and spicy notes such as clove or pepper, depending on the winemaking.
