Viré-Clessé

Viré-Clessé, a lesser known appellation in the Mâconnais region of Southern Burgundy, produces excellent and exquisite Chardonnay wines. The gained its appellation in 1999 and unites the villages of Viré and Clessé, both of which have long been known for their high-quality white wines. The vineyards contain a mix of limestone and clay soils, giving ideal conditions for making beautiful chardonnay wines.

The winemaking history of Viré-Clessé dates back to ancient times, with monks from the Abbey of Cluny playing a decisive role. Over the centuries, the region held and still holds a reputation for producing elegant and aromatic wines that reflects the terroir of the Mâconnais.

Viré-Clessé wines are known for their freshness and rich aroma’s, with notes of ripe stone fruits, citrus, white flowers, and hints of honey. Some wines from Viré-Clessé can develop a subtle touch of botrytis, adding depth and a nice sweetness. Viré-Clessé wines can age gracefully.
