The terroir and geography of Saint-Veran wines
Situated in the southern of Maconnais, Saint-Veran forms a belt around Pouilly-Fuisse, split into two separate areas by its neighbor. Its vineyards are part of the hills that include the famous Rock of Solutre, with soils ideal for Chardonnay: fossiliferous limestone, grey marl, and clay-with-flints. The northern area includes Davaye, Prisse, and Solutre-Pouilly, while the southern section features Chanes, Chasselas, Leynes, and Saint-Verand.
As Burgundy’s southernmost appellation, Saint-Veran overlaps slightly with northern Beaujolais, where Saint-Amour produces both Saint-Veran white wines and Beaujolais Crus. Often overshadowed by Pouilly-Fuisse, Saint-Veran wines offer excellent quality at a more accessible price, showcasing the unique terroirs of the Maconnais hills.
