The history of Bonnes-Mares

The name "Bonnes-Mares" is presumably originated from the Cistercian Bonnes Meres ("good mothers") of the Notre Dame de Tart Abbey, which was founded in 1125. This ancient connection links the vineyard to its northern neighbour, Clos de Tart. Despite stylistic differences among devotees due to soil variances at the location, all Bonnes-Mares wines are of exceptional quality and longevity. In good vintages, these wines can age beautifully for 30-50 years.

The Terroir and geography of Bonnes-Mares

The Rich and deep soils generate strong and structured wines and offer delicate and fragrant expressions. Napoleonic inheritance restrictions resulted in around 19 producers having parcels of varied sizes, and this figure is anticipated to rise, emphasizing the vineyard's complexity.

Bonnes Mares is a perfect expression of what the pinot noir grape can bring.

Famous producers of Bonnes-Mares

Bonnes-Mares is associated with several of Burgundy's most prominent wineries. Domaine Georges Roumier, located in Chambolle-Musigny, is known for its rare and highly sought-after wines, which are considered among the best in the region. Domaine Drouhin-Laroze in Gevrey-Chambertin is another well-known winery. This estate owns vineyards around the Côte de Nuits and produces Pinot Noir-based red wines. Drouhin-Laroze illustrates the versatility and quality of Burgundy's winemaking history, producing wines ranging from grand cru to village level.
