Irancy

Irancy, is a small appellation in northern Burgundy and one of the few regions in the area dedicated to red wines. Situated in the Yonne department near Chablis, Irancy is renowned for its Pinot Noir. The terroir consists of limestone and clay soils and combined with a cool continental climate it results in wines that are fresh, structured, and beautifully expressive.

Winemaking in Irancy dates back to Roman times. Historically, Irancy’s wines were prized in Paris and beyond, often blended with other Burgundian reds to add depth and character. Unlike most Burgundy appellations, Irancy permits the addition of small amounts of César, an ancient grape variety that gives a certain spiciness and extra tannins to the wines.

Irancy wines are known for their deep ruby color and aromas of red and black cherries, raspberries, violets, and earthy undertones. The hightest quality wines also develop notes of spice and licorice. Irancy wines make excellent food companions with the local Burgundian cuisine.
